SPRING TRY-OUTS CANCELLED
This season BMHA set up spring try-outs as both our OMHA contact and our Association interpreted the OHF rules to be for AAA centres and above which did not impeded Bracebridge as a "BB" Centre. A complaint was made to the OHF and they have ruled that the Regulations apply to any and all hockey centres in Ontario. We approached the OMHA for the reasons below but Port Hope was denied in February a similar request and BMHA wishes to continue as an OMHA Member in good standing which meant we could not hold try-outs. Our Ice Scheduler has done a tremendous job reducing our Associations outstanding ice times so please watch the schedule.

SPRING TRY-OUT FACTS:
To STOP the absurd rumours surrounding these try-out here are the 3 FACTUAL (in the Board minutes) reasons BMHA wanted to hold Spring Try-outs.

1) BMHA for several years now have been trying to arrange try-outs when each player would be at their best. Team selection is geared to having the best on each team for the January OMHA deadline but many teams are selected and finalized the first week of September. Players who have attended hockey schools or hockey camps tend to be better prepared for these try-outs and those who aspire to different sports soccer, baseball, lacrosse, and water skiing to name a few fall behind during the "fall try-outs" only to excel past those selected early and miss a spot on a team they deserve to be on.

2) Another reason we have decided to rank our players in an early try-out is so the Coaches selected for the new season will be allowed to promote summer programs with only a selected group (20) who by their ranking will be the most likely candidates to make our first entry teams the next season. This will reduce the appearance of favourtism and make the number involved more manageable. This is a real need as it has been a request the last 2 seasons in BMHA and has been logistically impossible given the current timing.

3) The third reason to run these try-outs is to certify our Coaches and the possible staff for these Rep. Teams. Anyone who current holds a Coaches or Trainers Card will see an August 31st expiry date on their card. This season this deadline is just that a "deadline" or cut-off for these Coaches or Trainers. If these Coaches have not yet attended the required recertification courses or the necessary OMHA Continuing Education Programs "Specialty Clinics" needed to recertify by the August 31st date then these Coaches and Trainers will have to redo their Coaches Clinic which for D1 Coaches is a 2 day event. By having our teams trimmed to a manageable 20 our Association would be able to see who possible staff members would be and also who might be willing to Coach a 2nd entry or Select Team. BMHA would then be able to qualify each person with summer clinics if we needed too.

These are the FACTS. In no way would these try-outs have affected OHL or OHA or and Junior Program or any AAA teams selections. Each of these centres will be doing the same during the same time so that they can become prepared just as BMHA wanted to do.

These try-outs did not limit anyone from try-outs in the FALL. It is common to hold 2 separate try-out times one in the Spring and one in the Fall. Anyone would be welcome for either but Fall try-outs would be paid for on an individual ice time bases unlike a try-out card set up we would run in the Spring.

We also anticipate a benefit for our Association and Team Officials so they can be selected qualified and actively seeking tournament opportunities during the beginning of the season like other major centres rather then 1/3 of the way through the season in September.

It is hoped that those who have been exposed to ridiculous alternative reasons will now better understand where we as an Association wish to be which is better prepared. We do not want to be caught off guard with unqualified Coaches or unknown Select team information as has been the case in years passed.

                        CONGRATULATIONS
